Edmond Halley hatte einen Lehrstuhl für Geometrie. Für die Orientierung auf See entwickelte er ein neues Verfahren, mit dem er die Laufbahn von Kometen berechnen konnte. Seine Vermutung, dass der von ihm untersuchte Komet zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt wieder beobachtbar sein sollte, bestätigte sich. Der Komet wurde nach ihm benannt.
